Madeira
lies about 650km west of Morocco and enjoys year-long sub-tropical
climate. Winter months are spring-like and summer months are comfortably
warm. Due to this mild climate, the island is a garden paradise
where almost anything seems to grow :from daffodils to orchids, strawberries
to bananas. Parks and gardens abound, all with wonderful displays
of tropical plants and trees.
The coastline has numerous sea-water pools, both natural and man-made,
but few sandy beaches. Porto Santo, a nearby island has a 9km stretch
of golden beach, ideal for swimming and surfing.
The interior is very mountainous and much of it is criss-crossed
with irrigation canals called levadas. The footpaths which run alongside
these waterways enable walkers to explore the rugged mountains and
lush valleys.

| Funchal,the
capital, is a small,
picturesque city with narrow
bustling streets and many fine traditional old buildings. A cleaner,
more colourful city would be hard to find. There are shops a-plenty;
some selling traditional ware, others bearing the same names that
you would find in any large European city. After shopping, relax in
one of the many restaurants and cafes where the food is delicious
and the hospitality is warm and generous. |
